Planning for growth
Major pipes, pump stations and treatment plants that serve whole communities, known as bulk water and wastewater infrastructure are planned, funded and delivered in line with Auckland Council’s Future Development Strategy. The strategy sets out growth sequencing and the infrastructure to support it.
Development outside the areas identified in the strategy, including from private plan changes and fast tracks, as well as climate change and population growth are rapidly shifting demand.
The full benefits of our major infrastructure programme will take time to be felt. Because infrastructure on this scale has complex delivery, in most cases we will not be able to bring forward services for unplanned growth areas. Servicing these areas can impact capacity, resilience and project delivery.
We manage this by encouraging early engagement from developers, as well as monitoring capacity and providing regular updates, so developers and other key stakeholders have timely information about connection availability. This helps us support growth and maintain safe and reliable water and wastewater services.
If you are planning a large development, please get in touch early so we can help you understand the key things to consider to support your planning.
