2023 - Extreme Weather, Midpoint Breakthrough and Transition

The largest wastewater infrastructure project in New Zealand history

Early in 2023, Auckland experienced major storm events, including a cyclone, which caused flooding at several sites, including Māngere. Despite this, staff remained safe and recovery works enabled construction to continue. In September 2023, the TBM reached the halfway point, breaking through into Shaft B at May Road. This milestone allowed tunnelling operations to shift north from May Road, while the Māngere site began transitioning from a TBM launch shaft into a critical pump station.
