2024 - Major Infrastructure and Southern Section Completion

The largest wastewater infrastructure project in New Zealand history

With tunnelling progressing steadily north, 2024 focused on constructing key above-ground and underground infrastructure. At Māngere, pumps, generators, electrical systems, and odour control facilities were installed. Complex works such as the confluence chamber and live network connections were successfully completed. By the end of 2024, the southern section of the tunnel was fully inspected, isolated with bulkheads, and declared ready for operation in early 2025, a major milestone after five years of construction.
