Watercare's Central Interceptor
2025 - Southern Operation, Final Breakthrough and System Integration
The largest wastewater infrastructure project in New Zealand history
In early 2025, the southern section was progressively brought into service following careful commissioning and testing. This began delivering early environmental benefits. Meanwhile, the TBM completed its journey to Point Erin, marking the final breakthrough and completion of the 16.2-kilometre main tunnel. The TBM was dismantled and removed, and focus shifted to system-wide integration. Including testing shafts, connections, and pump station operations.
